Wellness, wellbeing, mindfulness. These are the words on everybody’s lips regarding mental and physical health. Wellness can be described as ‘State of being in good physical and mental health, especially as an actively pursued goal.’
As we enter into a new year, its that time again to take stock of our lives, and assess where improvement is necessary. We tend to lean more towards improvement in the physical aspect of our lives (new gym contracts, new running shoes for christmas, promises of joining boot camp- we’ve all been there) but just as important is to realise where mental improvements can be made.
Considering we spend a huge amount of our time at work it makes sense to look at the wellbeing within our workplace and focus on where improvements can be made.

These statistics are based on a 39.2 hour work week (it is appreciated that a lot of therapists will do more).
If the average work week is 39.2 hours, this means that we will roughly work 92 120 hours over our supposed 50 year career (come on lottery!). This translates to:
- 14% of your total lifespan over the course of 76 years (hopefully we all surpass that!)
- 23.3% of your total time during the course of a 50 year working-life
- 35% of your total waking hours over a 50 year working-life period assuming 8 hours of sleep a night
You get the gist. We spend a lot of time at work.
Therapists jobs are incredibly taxing both emotionally and physically. Depending on the type of therapy you deliver, whether it is massage, manicures, facials or anything in between, all these require an significant amount of physical as well as mental input. Looking after our bodies is an important aspect as our bodies are the money makers (in the right sense of course!). The motto at London Mobile Spa is ‘ Happy therapist, Happy spa, Happy client’. We believe this to be absolutely true. If our therapists are struggling in some way, the service delivered will be impacted, the spa will be impacted and ultimately the client will be dissatisfied.
What are the main detriments to wellness in the workplace?
We have identified a few:
- Lack of appreciation- whether that is from the business itself or from clients
- Long working hours- sometimes unavoidable
- Workplace conflict with other staff members
- Personal problems
It is easy to expect the responsibility for dealing with these issues to lie solely on the managers and owners;however it is important to realise that it is every staff member’s responsibility to assist with morale and wellbeing within the business.
Here are a few ways to improve on wellness within a work environment:
- Checking in with a colleague who seems to be struggling can go a long way at building a trusting and supportive environment- and ultimately have a very positive impact on the whole team.
- As managers, providing incentives to your team members encourages colleagues to perform well, and rewarding those performances (outside of salary) really shows appreciation, and in turn creates a much happier team.
- Working as a temp therapist, it is easy to get over worked and forget that a break is necessary. You decide how much you work and often temp therapists forget the importance of taking time off to recoup and revitalise. This requires becoming somewhat financially savvy. Knowing how much you need to earn over what you want to earn will allow you take time off when needed. This is the beauty of temp work.
- There will always be instances where a client is a… “difficult person” (let’s be polite). Not personalising instances where a client is unreasonable is key in surviving situations that could really impact us emotionally at work. Similarly encouraging a colleague who has had to deal with a difficult client creates an environment of support and communication. Take/give criticism when it is necessary of course but keep it constructive.
- If at all possible, create a positive personal daily routine for yourself. As boring as this sounds, it does wonders for calming your mind. Things like waking up early, doing some exercise, meditation, planning meals, for example, are all methods that will actually set you up for a more positive and efficient day.
